Aims

The module aims to develop students understanding and knowledge of radical thought and movements in education.

Learning Outcomes

Synthesise radical critiques of mainstream education system from political, philosophical and sociological perspectives
2.
Evaluate the practical application of radical theories and traditions of education

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Educational hegemony will be questioned in light of radical theories of education (e.g. toxic schooling and schooling as ‘violence’ e.g. Harber, 2004). The module will critically consider some of the key radical educational philosophers and their theories (e.g. A.S.Neill; Illich; Holt and Friere). Radical educational practices will be explored utilising a case study approach (e.g. Free Schools and democratic schools; Forest Schools; Home education). Radical educational approaches within mainstream schools/ radicalising mainstream educational provision
Module Overview:
This module will develop your understanding of radical theories of education and some of the key radical educational philosophers (e.g. Illich, Friere and A.S.Neill). It will also consider how such theories of education are developed both within and outside mainstream educational practice.
