Aims

This module will develop good understanding how police officers need to work in multi-agency and partnership settings to work collaboratively to reduce crime and ASB. The module will support students in their understanding of how to prevent crime and harm in communities through engagement and collaborative problem solving. The module will explore both statutory and voluntary partnerships and examine the skills required to work with others outside of the police service and critically understand the barriers to effective partnerships. This module will develop an awareness of how communities can differ in terms of their needs and their challenges and explore how communities themselves can contribute to the prevention of crime.

Learning Outcomes

Assess the role of cooperation, co-production and partnerships in effective engagement and problem solving

Critically explore the communication, skills and practices required to build and sustain effective partnerships in reducing crime and harm
3.
Critically appraise the ethical challenges faced by communities, understand how national and international challenges impact upon crime and offending and critically appraise how collaboration contributes to crime reduction
4.
Examine theories of social capital and collective efficacy and critically appraise how they contribute to the safety of a community
5.
Critically appraise how partnerships contribute to the prevention of crime and what can be learned from understanding their contribution to policing
6.
Critically understand how to employ relevant strategies and initiatives to deliver effective preventative policing
7.
Select and create clear communication and presentation skills which supports working with others

Additional Information:
Lectures will provide the students with information and theories. Students will then explore the theory in more detail and context through facilitated discussion and exercises. Students will examine community vulnerability and risk and will develop their understanding of strategies to reduce harm for different communities. Students will explore the role of other groups and communities in preventing crime. Students will spend time working with community-based organisations enhancing their understanding of collaboration in action and drawing upon their learning about what works in evidence led policing. Students will then work in groups to put their knowledge into practice.
