Aims

1. To understand the social, historical and political constructions of matters related to drugs and intoxication. 2. To engage critically with on-going debates about drug control in local and international contexts. 3. To situate knowledge surrounding drugs and intoxication in their wider social/historical/political contexts, offering evidenced-based solutions to identified problems wherever possible.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the ways in which drugs and intoxication are socially and historically constructed.
2.
Show an appreciation of the contested nature of knowledge surrounding drug use, addiction, treatment and policy, through critical evaluation of the core assumptions and concepts underpinning such knowledge.
3.
Critically evaluate drug-related problems and offer evidence-based solutions where appropriate, informed by wider notions of ‘justice’.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:This course provides a platform for students to engage with cutting-edge debates in the drug field. It will enable learners to investigate and critically analyse a range of drug-related topics with the overriding goal of making evidence-based contributions to debates in these fields. The syllabus is constructed around the research expertise of the module teaching team and includes as indicative topics: • Drugs and History • Drugs and Globalization • Contemporary Drug Use in the UK • Debating Drug Policy Part 1 • Debating Drug Policy Part 2 • Drug Interventions Part 1 • Drug Interventions Part 2 • Theorizing Drugs and Intoxication Part 1 • Theorizing Drugs and Intoxication Part 2 • Drug Futures: Thinking about ‘Justice’
