Aims
1. To evaluate different theories on gender.
2. To explore how the body is shaped and regulated through gendered power structures, laws and norms in society and how these can be challenged and disrupted.
3. To examine in depth contemporary issues through a gender lens.

Module Overview:
In this module you will explore sociological and feminist debates around the body, gender and sexuality. You will engage with ideas which challenge the normative representations and 'taken for granted ideas' around body shape and image, gender and sexualities. It covers topics such as body modification, beauty, pornography, sex work, trans* identities and violences against the body.

Additional Information:The module examines theories of gender and how these disrupt binary and essentialist understandings. It engages with sociological, feminist and queer theory to discuss representations of gender, sexuality and the body. It explores contemporary issues through an intersectional gender lens and enables students to critically evaluate a relevant piece of popular culture of their choice.
