Aims

1. To provide students the opportunity to conduct a focused piece of critical independent work in an international context, under supervision, on an area congruent with the themes and substance of the Sociology programme. 2. To provide a vehicle for the improvement and development of a variety of transferable employability skills and abilities appropriate to the task in hand. 3. To encourage students to monitor and reflect critically on their own learning and develop key skills such as group work.

Learning Outcomes

Identify a manageable topic, and design a plan of study.

Reflect upon own learning and experiences, including experiences of carrying out research in an unfamiliar socio-cultural environment.
3.
Critically apply research skills in an international setting.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Overview of field venue context Negotiation of international case-study topic Developing and presenting a robust research proposal Ethical considerations of researching in an international context and blogging Blogs and reflective diaries Small-group discussion and advice clinics Undertaking research in an international setting Research report guidance
Module Overview:
This module provides the opportunity for you to undertake independent guided study on a topic, congruent with the aims and themes of the programme within an international context. You will also further develop a wide range of study skills in the process such as working in small groups, writing reflective blog posts, considering the ethics of blogging and social media and applying sociological concepts and ideas to an international setting. The module has a compulsory international fieldwork element incorporated which provides the backdrop to your study focus.
Additional Information:This module provides the opportunity for the student to undertake independent guided study on a topic, congruent with the aims and themes of the programme within an international context. Students will also further develop a wide range of study and professional skills in the process such as working in small groups, writing reflective blog posts, consider the ethics of blogging and social media and applying sociological concepts and ideas to an international setting. The module has a compulsory international fieldwork element incorporated which provides the backdrop to the student's study focus. In order to attend and participate in the field visit, ethical approval must be gained via the proposal and research ethics application form. If ethical approval is not granted, an alternative desk-based research project must be arranged.
