This module aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills to work as public health practitioners in the community setting.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Overview of health and public health. Different perspectives on health. Determinants of health. The difference between health and health care. Exploration of the role of a public health practitioner. Incidence, prevalence and other concepts of risk. Healthy public policy. How current policy affects you and how you can influence future policy. Inequalities in health Programmes that tackle health inequalities. Evidence based practice. Where to find good epidemiological data. Health needs assessment. Health promotion. Partnership working. Empowerment and working with communities. Introduction to environmental health and housing and health. High risk and population approaches to health promotion. Social marketing

The module will introduce students to the discipline of public health and the use of evidence to improve services. Students will also learn how public policy can influence health needs and service development. The wider determinants of health and health inequalities will be examined in detail. Principles and concepts of health promotion will also be covered.
