Aims
To enable students to work independently on an appropriate dissertation that falls under the expertise of the programme
To develop the ability to analyse evidence in pursuit of a self-defined problem
To produce a substantial piece of written work, with appropriate scholarly
Learning Outcomes
1.
Critically evaluate a chosen field of critical literature and situate their own work within it through analysis of appropriate primary material
2.
Hone and apply a particular methodology or approach towards their chosen material to generate research and an informed critical position.
3.
Write a long, research-informed and scholarly essay which accords to high standards of presentation and referencing and develops an argument.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:May: introductory lecture: the dissertation
September-December: 4 lectures: Defining your topic; polishing your proposal; structuring your dissertation; writing your dissertation chapter
March: final lecture: writing up
May- March: 6 workshop sessions to follow lecture topics including a Library
induction.
The dissertation topic will be negotiated between student and staff, on the basis of the student's proposed ideas and the stated interests of all staff circulated in advance. The allocation of supervisors and formulation of topics will be confirmed by the end of the second semester Level 5. Students will attend a number of individual supervision meetings and electronic feedback sessions (totalling 6

The aim of the Dissertation in History and English is to independently work on a idea that falls under the expertise of the programme. You will develop the ability to analyse evidence in pursuit of a self-defined problem and produce a substantial piece of written work.
Additional Information:This is an independent research project where students will produce a dissertation of 7000-8000 words. As such it offers them the chance to develop an area of research that interests them: this can include research already undertaken or as yet unexplored topic. Students will work with their supervisors to develop their research projects and to write up this material. They will also be assisted by workshops and tutorials.
