Aims

1. To introduce students to key components of a dissertation using support lectures, the VLE and one-on-one tutorials. 2. To formulate a research plan and gather, synthesize and make use of relevant literature. 3. To design and carry out an advanced undergraduate level research project and present their findings in an appropriate academic format.

Learning Outcomes

Identify an appropriate and original topic for research and critically consider the research process, identifying contingencies for completion.
2.
Undertake appropriate research activities and present their findings as a dissertation, adhering to guidelines on structure and referencing.
3.
Present a coherent and reflective discussion of work in progress.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Writing a suitable project proposal; Research questions; Methodological considerations; Discussing existing research and defining your own perspective; Locating scholarly literature and library skills; Writing and analysis; Research ethics Producing your progress report presentation; Effective and timely approaches to writing your dissertation.
Module Overview:
The dissertation module requires you to undertake a sustained piece of academic analysis on a self-selected topic and present this in a proper academic form. You will demonstrate a thorough understanding of theoretical and methodological issues relevant to your chosen subject of study. The dissertation module will move through three key phases: proposal development, researching and data collection, and writing up and re-drafting. It enables you to pursue in-depth research on a topic that enthuses you and offer new insights on this.
Additional Information:The module requires students to undertake a sustained piece of academic analysis and present this in a proper academic form. This allows students to achieve a thorough understanding of theoretical and methodological issues relevant to their chosen subject of study. Ethical approval for the planned research must be obtained as necessary.
