Aims

To provide students with an ability to relate macroeconomic and microeconomic theory to the design and analysis of public policy. To assess the contribution of economics to a range of contemporary policy debates in both the public and private sectors.

Learning Outcomes

Evaluate and apply macroeconomic analysis to a range of public policy choices that are of contemporary importance.

Outline Syllabus:Contemporary macroeconomic issues – a review of topical policy controversies The austerity debate Economics and the role of the state Crisis: lessons from the Great Depression, the financial crisis, the Great Recession and the Eurozone crisis Contemporary microeconomic issues – a review of topical policy controversies Industrial policy Competition policy Inequality, poverty and redistribution Market failure and appraising competing policy solutions
