Aims

To critically examine the position of youth in society today. To critically examine the historical basis and development of youth justice in England and Wales. To critically discuss the construction and development of youth justice policy in England and Wales, both historically and currently. To develop critical understanding of key contemporary issues at the different stages in current youth justice practice, including the impact of theory and policy on such practice.

Learning Outcomes

Critically evaluate the social construction of the relationship between youth and crime.
2.
Critically consider the development of youth justice policy in England and Wales, and show a critical awareness of the conflicting policies operating within the system.
3.
Show a critical understanding of how current youth justice legislation influences youth justice practice.
4.
Demonstrate the ability to critically assess the risk posed by young people in the youth court process, and to evaluate an appropriate sentencing outcome for a given youth offending scenario.
5.
Critically analyse youth justice systems in countries outside England and Wales, and compare them to youth justice in England and Wales.

Module Overview:
This module will provide you with a critical understanding of the position of youth in society today, the relationship between youth and crime, and the range of ways in which criminal justice responds to youth crime in England and Wales. It will provide you with knowledge of the past and current policy and legislation relating to young people. You will have the opportunity to develop practice skills of assessing seriousness, suitability and risk assessment in relation to offences and sentences for young people, as well as oral presentation skills by preparing and completing the module's assessed presentation.
