Aims

For students to be able to demonstrate an understanding of the injustices that exist within society and the criminal justice system.

Define the issues around significant miscarriages of justice

Explain the issues around the major social divisions that exist in society

Outline the impact of the major social divisions on the nature and extent of crime

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Introduction and the concepts of justice, injustice, power and powerlessness Social divisions, inequality and poverty Social Exclusion, problem populations and CJ policy Class, crime and inequality Women, crime and inequality Ethnicity, crime and inequality Mental Illness, Learning Disabilities, crime and inequality Age, crime and inequality Homelessness, crime and inequality Miscarriages of Justice
Additional Information:This module will encourage the students to critically reflect on the concepts of injustice and justice, inequality, poverty, power and powerlessness. The students will be encouraged to think about how these concepts impact on the experience of people processed through and experiencing the system of justice.
