Aims

The aims of this module are to: 1. Provide the student with a global perspective on the role of theatre in specific cultural and political expressions. 2. Enlighten and challenge the student through discussions of equitable practice in theatre with a focus towards contemporary issues including, gender, queer theory and representation. 3. Provide the student with a greater understanding of the development of theatrical performance in conjunction with key historical, social, political and cultural movements. 4. Extend the students skills in musicianship, aural studies and music theory through applied studies of composers, scores and recordings.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Through research and debate, the module will explore how theatre movements have articulated social concerns and discourses, centring on questions of efficacy, responsibility and ethics. The module will focus on contemporary issues including, gender, queer theory and representation and challenge students to formulate informed and researched opinions on equitable and sustainable practices in theatre during the 21st century. Students will also continue their Music Materials studies from Level 4 by extending skills in musicianship, aural studies and music theory through applied study of certain composers and scores. This will provide the students with an analytical music theory framework and vital skills for their practice-based music studies.
Additional Information:This module equips students with greater understanding of the development of theatrical performance in conjunction with key historical, social, political and cultural movements as well as advanced skills in musicianship and score analysis. Assessment is via essay and written examination.
