Module Content

Outline Syllabus:The module comprises four parts: Voice: Building on the work in Level 4, students will develop their voice by working on a broader and more complex range of text-based material, including classical and heightened text. Activities will focus on increasing vocal capacity and precision, whilst developing flexibility and ease. Classwork will include a more complex exploration of the relationship between the voice and context, intention, and expressivity. Accents: The student will learn how to analyse their own accent to enhance their ability to learn accents beyond their own. They will sensitise their ear, psychophysical kinaesthetic awareness, and muscular flexibility to enable them to accurately reproduce sound changes. These include subtle shifts in pronunciation, tone, inflection, metre, phrasing and vocal focus, with ease and accuracy. Methods will include independent accent project/s, study of International Phonetic Alphabet and various accent examples. Text: Work on integrating the voice principles with heightened text, such as Shakespeare and Restoration Comedy. Students will develop a solo piece based on a theme of their choice. They will pick from a variety of stipulated texts to meet vocal and acting challenges with improved ease, expressiveness, clarity, precision, flexibility, range, and stamina. Thus, they will strengthen their ability to meet vocal demands in a variety of performance situations. Singing: Students will continue to explore the core technical vocal skills required for singing including Range, Pitch, Rhythm, Resonance, Projection, Articulation, Harmony and Musicality. Building on from previous studies, students will be introduced to a more complex range of repertoire, which will require higher levels of skill in harmony, musicality texture, and musical colour. The module will also start to explore the concept of acting through song. A portion of the students' studies will take the form of preparation for the assessment performance.
Additional Information:The module will allow student to apply their voice technique and artistry to a broader range of text-based material and, explore ways to integrate healthy principles of Voice and the principle of ease related to the Alexander Technique in exploring heightened text and accent acquisition. Assessment is via an accent presentation and a solo chamber performance.
