Aims

To enable the student to gain knowledge seminal examples of building remodelling and interior design from antiquity to the twentieth century. To enable students to understand the principal movements in twentieth century architecture within their various cultural and historical contexts. To understand and analyse seminal twentieth century architectural movements, ideas and buildings and to know their architects and designers. To research, analyse, and communicate the form and context of significant interior spaces encountered as part of the To research, develop and prepare an academic illustrated and fully referenced essay.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate an understanding of the major historical theories, movements and buildings and interiors which have influenced design in architecture.

Analyse and critically evaluate contemporary architectural movements and their role in the design process.

Communicate an understanding of the role of architectural and design precedent illustrating the role of social, economic and technical contexts.

Demonstrate an understanding of cultural context and how the theories, practices and technologies of the arts influence architecture and interior design.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:In this module you will analyse seminal examples of building remodelling and interior design from antiquity to the twentieth century. During the semester a directed Study Tour to a major city of architectural importance will introduce the student to invaluable first-hand experience with seminal buildings, their creators and their users. At the end of the semester students will produce a fully referenced and illustrated essay which conforms to standards for academic writing.
