Aims

The aims of this module are to: 1. Enhance the students technical and artistic skills within Jazz and Tap dance styles to a sophisticated level evidencing their appropriate selection and application in performance. 2. Ensure students understand the technical and artistic principals of Commercial dance and apply in presentation. 3. Explore strategies to expand artistic understanding and expression through performance.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:In Ballet, students will begin to study more complex movement vocabulary. Exercises will develop in speed and execution to challenge technical precision and acuity. In Jazz, students will be introduced to a wider range of movement sequences and combinations that are rhythmically and technically complex. Through musical theatre combinations, students will integrate technical and artistic elements, exploring their individual response to all styles. Tap classes will introduce a wider vocabulary and sequences will increase in complexity and intricacy. Each student will be required to demonstrate solo movement to ensure individual analysis of articulation and quality within the beat. Through style specific sequences, students will explore a wider range of musical styles, not only from the Musical Theatre cannon but also contemporary and urban musical styles that will be reflected in the style of Tap dance (Rhythm, hoofing etc.). In addition, students will begin to explore elements of free tap or improvisation. In Commercial dance, students will be exposed to a more varied program of styles including, Hip-Hop, Funk, Vogue Fem and other relevant Commercial Jazz styles.
Additional Information:This module equips students with an increased understanding of multiple dance styles as well as artistic individuality and awareness through movement. Assessment is via live, studio-based presentations.
