Aims

To provide comparative and critical knowledge on the procurement routes used in the construction industry.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Identify the role of project stakeholders in the procurement process.
2.
Evaluate current procurement options used in the construction industry, and the allocation of risk within these options.
3.
Evaluate current tendering methods and their associated codes of practice used in the construction industry.
4.
Identify the various contracts available to the different procurement options and evaluate the allocation of associated project risk.
5.
Critically review the concepts and the applications of sustainable development and sustainable construction and their integration within the procurement process.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Introduction to stakeholders and stakeholder mapping.

Strategies for stakeholder engagement.

Philosophy of procurement, public and private clients.

Risks inherent in the various procurement, contract and tendering options and their associated available contracts.

Procurement decision-making.

EU Procurement Directives and European/International approaches.

Definitions and applications of sustainability; sustainable construction, social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainable construction/sustainable procurement; Integration of sustainable construction within procurement strategies; enablers and barriers of sustainable construction procurement.

Dispute management and resolution in construction and engineering works.
Additional Information:
This module develops an understanding of the issues underpinning decisions made about procurement and contract strategies.
