Aims

This module aims to further enhance your understanding of the theories and conceptual approaches to performance and acting practice within the context of major artistic, intellectual and critical movements of the late 20th/early 21st Centuries. The module concentrates on research methodologies and advanced academic writing skills, the integration of research, theory and practice, utilising critical theories and contextual analysis, to evaluate process, performance and cultural-readings according to a studied work, with cross-modular reference to Advanced Acting, Acting for Camera II, Acting & Digital Media and Artistic Practice II.

Analyse a range of socio-cultural, contextual and critical perspectives, outlining their significance and application in film/media performance

Contrast and critically debate cultural ideologies within contextual frameworks

Demonstrate independent research methods and apply original, creative thinking in the development and presentation of critically engaged arguments in response to performance practice

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:In this module you will explore and identify cultural, critical and contextual readings of various forms, styles and genres from the acting canon. You will examine research methodologies to advance your academic writing skills, analysing critical theorists, theories and philosophical perspectives on texts, performance forms, media, styles and genres to be explored elsewhere on your programme. This arms you with an understanding of the contextual significance and interpretation of works, writers and creators. You will investigate directorial concepts and critical impacts, apply theoretical research and interpret the practical realisation of artistic works in order to unearth original thinking and ideas surrounding performance. This module prepares and supports you for the critical demands of Cultural Perspectives III at Level 6.
