Aims

An understanding of the integrated nature of musical theatre performance (acting, singing and dance). An understanding of specific historical forms and structures of musical theatre and the methods by which the narrative is developed. An understanding of the process of rehearsal and performance development for musical theatre. The opportunity to start to develop your own personal approach to performing in musical theatre. Advanced levels of technical singing skills for the contemporary era of musical theatre writing. Advanced levels of practical and applied knowledge of healthy practice for singing. Advanced singing performance skills and the ability to work expressively and creatively with material from a range of styles and genres

Learning Outcomes

Apply the ability to integrate the core skills and techniques of musical theatre performance (acting, singing and movement/dance) to a sustained level in a performance setting.

Analyse and apply, through practice and research, a recognition of the various forms and structures of contemporary musical theatre and the methods by which the narrative is developed.

Apply the skill of acting through song in different performance contexts and styles.

Apply their understanding of advanced technical singing skills, demonstrating development in vocal strength and range, style, complexity, diction.

Analyse and apply expressive, evaluated performance skills in the demonstration of advanced acting through song skills.

Apply versatility through the performance of a range of contrasting songs, exhibiting a range of vocal, stylistic and performance skills across the musical theatre repertoire from the 1960s onwards.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Singing The module will explore complex and demanding work so as to consolidate the students skills, knowledge and expertise and to broaden their repertoire and experience. The module explores: Breathing,
Range,
Pitch,
Rhythm,
Resonance,
Projection,
Articulation,
 Development of a range of Vocal Qualities, Musicality and Vocal Health The focus of the singing studies in this module will be on the development of a sustainable and versatile singing voice for professional performance in musical theatre and elsewhere. One to One Singing One to one singing lessons will focus on the development of individual singing style and technique. Tutors will continually assess students' voices in order to provide a technical programme that will be tailored specifically to suit individual vocal needs. Students will have the opportunity to explore their vocal potential and create a repertoire of material suitable for professional auditions. Repertoire classes will provide students with the opportunity to prepare songs for further work in individual lessons. Students will be guided in sourcing appropriate repertoire, learning the material from their own personal resources as opposed to the internet etc., preparation of sheet music ready for work in one to one lessons. This will also at times provide the opportunity to receive peer and teacher feedback on individual song presentation work. Musical Theatre Repertoire The module is delivered through a practical exploration of the staging and development of scenes and sequences from existing musical theatre productions through which students will explore:
 1.the relationship between the sung and the spoken (and particularly the transition from one to the other);
2.the integrated relationship between dance/movement, acting and singing in musical theatre story telling;
3.the dramatic / theatrical strategies used in a range of musical theatre productions (from the contemporary musical theatre repertoire);
4.the rehearsal process used in musical theatre performance. Students will have multiple sessions each week to develop sequences and scenes from productions. Students will be able to explore a wide range of musical theatre forms from the contemporary musical theatre genre. Throughout the module students will be encouraged to reflect upon their studies in this module and in their specialist modules in acting, dance / movement and singing.
