Aims

The aim of this module is to teach students the development and operation of international humanitarian law that regulates conduct during armed conflict. It focuses on key issues international humanitarian law and its application, enabling students to examine the historical and theoretical developments, sources, fundamental principles and objectives of the rules governing both international and internal armed conflicts.

Understand the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law, its relationship with other branches of international law

Evaluate political and cultural factors which influence the development and application of international humanitarian law
3.
Evaluate the application of humanitarian law in different contexts

Status Based Rules: Combatants and PoWs 4. Rules Governing Hostilities I: Military Objectives 5. Rules Governing Hostilities II: Civilians and the Principle of Proportionality 6.
