Aims

To allow students to draw further upon their work based learning and drawing upon work based experience in order to evaluate a theme or issue within current early years practice. Students will be able to focus on one area of interest as a development of their previous study.

Learning Outcomes

Evaluate the literature to identify a relevant area for in-depth research-based study

Evaluate one methodological tool, after testing it in practice

Analyse the findings from the small scale research undertaken

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Undertaking research as a practitioner; writing a research proposal, reviewing the literature; qualitative and quantitative research methods, data collection and analysis, research tools, ethical issues related to research with children and young people.
Additional Information:The main basis of this module is to provide students with an enhanced awareness of academic research. The advantages and limitations of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies will be examined and evaluated. Students will be expected to search the literature, including the use of electronic databases, to investigate an area of their professional practice in more depth. They will then be expected to produce a small scale research proposal in this area; identify appropriate methodology and document the finding from the small scale study.
