Aims
The module aims to develop students understanding of the legislative and policy
framework which sets out the parameters for the investigation of criminal offences.
Provide the opportunity for students to demonstrate and explain investigative procedures through the use of case studies and crime scene practical.
Provide an opportunity for students to critically explore the range of regulatory
processes and professional values which inform practice, theories of team work,
communication, issues of professional status and power and working across
organisational boundaries.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Identify and apply knowledge of key theoretical, legislative, organisational, policy
and practice frameworks which underpin criminal investigation.
2.
Critically analyse the effectiveness of criminal investigation processes in achieving
desired results and be able to identify barriers to effectiveness and strategies to
overcome them.
3.
Analyse the opportunities and challenges presented for criminal investigation and
evaluate their social impacts for diverse and/or vulnerable communities or
individuals.

Outline Syllabus:The role of the investigator
The Investigative Mindset in accordance with the Core Investigative Doctrine, 2012
Types of crime investigation
Investigative interviewing
Managing victims, witnesses and suspects
Investigative decision making
Ethics of investigation, governance and accountability
The impact of poor decision making and ethical standards on police legitimacy and how this impacts on the prevention and detection of crime
Additional Information:The module aims to develop students understanding of the legislative and policy
framework which sets out the parameters of criminal investigation. Students will be
able to identify, and critically appraise, the context out of which practices grew. How
investigation can be affected by personal values. The module will explore relevant
legislation and policy and practice guidance in relation to information sharing,
confidentiality and public protection. Students, through the analysis of critical
incidents, will develop an understanding of good practice in relation to investigation.
The assessments on the module will enable students to develop a critical
understanding of the policy and procedural guidance which relate to a specific area
of the field. Through the use of work related case studies students will critically
explore the opportunities and challenges presented for investigation and be
introduced to theoretical perspectives, policy developments and cutting edge
empirical research. The module will have a specific focus on critically appraising the
practicalities, and challenges of investigation.
