Aims

The aims of the module are to enable the student to: 1. Relate to advanced concepts of Music Theory as it applies to different styles of music. 2. Consolidate previous music theory learning to acquire and apply advanced techniques and tools for music production and composition. 3. Acquire sophistication in the use of harmony, voice-leading, four-part writing and harmonic dictation.

Demonstrate applied use of advanced chords, chord progressions and scales.

Modify, manipulate and use advanced harmonies: modulation, harmonic function of the chords, cadences and voice-leading.
3.
Explain the use of counterpoint and demonstrate the practical applications of counterpoint in free musical composition.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:The module explores: · Chord construction: extended chords, added tone chords, suspended chords, altered chords, slash chords. Symbols and inversions. · Scales: Modal, Pentatonic, Whole tone, Blues, Diminished. · Harmonic movement: cadences, harmonic function, harmonic rhythm, voice-leading. Bass lines and harmonized melodies. · Modulation: concept and types. · Analysis of melodies: Strong and weak notes, main and secondary notes, movements in the melodies. Phrasing. · Transposition. · Fundamental techniques of counterpoint and practical applications of counterpoint in musical composition.
Additional Information:The module builds on skills acquired at NQ4. Assessment is via two exams.
