Aims
The module aims to provide the students with a comprehensive understanding of:
1. The history of art music and the nature and style of music from particular eras and genres.
2. The creative and structural elements of art music.
3.The opportunity to explore, through practice, the differing approaches to art music performance and composition
4. The social, cultural and political underpinnings of the eras and genres exam.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Compare and contrast the relationship between art music forms and the historical, cultural, social and political context in which they were created and performed.
2.
Classify and group the different forms and structures of a variety of genres within art music.
3.
Identify and simulate the differing dynamics and stylistic qualities of the most prominent works from different historical periods.
4.
Recreate musical works in specific music genres, styles and trends.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:This is module is both theoretical and practical.
Theory / History
Within this part of the module the student explores the development of art music from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. The module analyses the changing relationship between art music and the period in which it developed taking into account historical, cultural, social and political factors. The module also explores the form and structure of different genres of art music and how this has developed up to the contemporary period.
Practical
Building on the student’s historical and theoretical studies, the students are supported in exploring, creating and presenting the differing stylistic and dynamic compositional characteristics of art music forms from history.
Additional Information:The module builds on skills acquired at NQ4, equipping students with a more refined understanding of the international music economy. Assessment is via an essay and a practical piece of music.
