Aims

To introduce the analysis of human bones and their implications for reconstructing identity.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Use osteological material and osteometric equipment appropriately
2.
Name the musculoskeletal elements of the appendicular skeleton
3.
Name the musculoskeletal elements of the axial skeleton
4.
Demonstrate a knowledge of variation in the skeleton and why variation exists
5.
Curate osteological material effectively and understand the related ethical and legal issues

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:The focus of this module is on learning and understanding the human skeleton, its anatomy and development. Core content includes anatomical orientation and terminology, joints and skeletal anatomy, osteometry, procedures for identifying and siding human bones, as well as identifying their anatomical features, and distinguishing human from non-human bones. The module firstly addresses the appendicular skeleton, followed by the axial skeleton, including specialist topics of skeletal development (juvenile osteology) and human dentition. Evolutionary perspectives of human skeletal development and variation are introduced, alongside contemporary ethical issues such as repatriation.
Module Overview:
This module provides an introduction to the development and anatomy of the bones of the human skeleton with a view to identify human bones and teeth, their significance within the body, the landmarks and measurements used in the field of biological anthropology.
Additional Information:This module provides an introduction to the development and anatomy of the bones of the human skeleton with a view to identify human bones and teeth, their significance within the body, and the landmarks and measurements used in the field of biological anthropology. Students will be trained in curatorial skills for the osteologist including washing, recording and boxing specimens. Curatorial knowledge of how human material should be stored (temperature, humidity, ethics and legal issues).
