Aims
To assess critically the nature, scope and limits of international human rights law and their political and social contexts
Learning Outcomes
1.
Understand the significance of human rights for individuals, in light of international and domestic legislation and violations of those rights.
2.
Understand issues in international human rights law, such as statelessness and refugee recognition and the development of legal instruments relating to them.
3.
Evaluate the effectiveness of legal instruments and the significance of political context upon their enforcement.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:1. History and Development of Human Rights Protection
2. Human Rights in Europe with a focus on 20th Century European issues
3. International and Regional Rights instruments
4. Human rights in UK domestic context
5. Current issues in internal human rights such as rights of refugees, genocide, statelessness, UN intervention.

This module is intended for you if you have an interest in how law affects groups and individual people, sometimes helping them to overcome difficulties, sometimes failing them. It will also help students with a general interest in civil liberties and international law.
