Introduction to practical project design and management in theory and through structured learning exercises including project preparation

Learning Outcomes

Explain key conceptual frameworks which underpin Geographical research.

Develop employability skills that can be applied once leaving the university

Prepare for and communicate independent dissertation projects

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:What research is and its place in society; Paradigms and research traditions; Inductive and deductive logic; Science methodologies and falsification; Humanities methodologies; Reviewing literature to formulate research questions; Research ethics and risk assessments; Choosing and designing methodologies; Statistical underpinnings of sampling strategies; Research data collection and analysis; Deconstructing research papers; Communicating research findings; Individual work designing and operationalising research projects; Evaluating dissertations done by earlier students.
