Aims
The aim of this module is for students to explore the pedagogy and practice of primary education and to become aware of the current issues and debates.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Discuss the theories that underpin effective practice in primary education.
2.
Examine the evidence base for effective practice in primary education
3.
Reflect upon the role of adults in supporting children in the early years and the broader primary phase of education.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:
Students will look at theory, practice and current issues in primary phase of education which will include but will not be limited to the following:
Current research about ‘effective’ pedagogy and practice
The importance of talk in the early years and primary phase
Organising the environment to support the emergence and development of communication skills
The role of adults (educators, including parents) in supporting early literacy and numeracy and other areas of development and learning
Using immersive activity and child-led opportunities
Planning adult-directed activities/ towards formal learning

The assessment asks students to use their developing knowledge of theory and research and demonstrate an awareness of contemporary issues in primary education through academic reflection.
