Aims
This module aims:
Explore criminological theory which examines criminalisation, management and punishment of social divisions.
Use case studies to illustrate the management of social divisions across the policy terrains of penology and social policy.
Explore the impacts of criminalisation and punishment on different social divisions and how social justice might be achieved.

Outline Syllabus:
This module will explore key theories around punishment, social control and social harm. Using a variety of case studies, the module will explore and evaluate how the state seeks to manage social divisions. Drawing on critical scholarship and activism in criminology and social policy, the module will explore how social justice might be achieved.

Drawing upon key theories around punishment, social control and social harm, this module will explore the state’s management of social divisions. Using a variety of case studies, it will explore the reconfiguration of punishment across criminal justice, and allied agencies, and the impacts this has in relation to a variety of social divisions. It will encourage students to reflect on how a more socially just approach to social divisions might be achieved.
