Aims

To provide students with an introduction to the nature and importance of the concept
of youth

To develop a critical understanding of the nature, causes and effects of problems,
issues and concerns experienced by young people.


To analyse the role of government legislation and initiatives in dealing with the issues faced by young people.

Outline Syllabus:
The origins of the term 'youth'
Historical development of services for young people
Education, employment and young people
Youth, delinquency and youth crime and justice
School exclusions, learning away from the school setting
Young people and drugs
Intervention strategies for working with young people
Housing, homelessness and young people
Role and services provided by the voluntary sector
Teenage pregnancy, young parents and sex education
The principles of diversion work
Community issues and young people
Module Overview:
This module provides you with an introduction to the nature and importance of the concept of youth. You will develop a critical understanding of the nature, causes and effects of problems, issues and concerns experienced by young people, alongside analysing the role of government legislation and initiatives in dealing with the issues faced by young people.
Additional Information:
Students will be encouraged to consider the concept of youth from a number of different perspectives as well as considering how young people are impacted by government policy.
