Aims

This module aims to develop an understanding of the historical and socio-political and influences on the development of physical education by considering how changes in society, politics and philosophy have impacted on Physical Education curriculum, pedagogy and practice.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Evaluate how historical developments have impacted on Physical Education (curriculum planning, content, pedagogy and assessment).
2.
Analyse how different perspectives, philosophies, politics and changes in society, have impacted on the development of Physical Education.
3.
Reflect on and analyse the structures and agencies that contribute to the development of opportunities for young people in Physical Education

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Reflecting on experiences of Physical Education: Historical context; parents, grandparents, teachers etc. Historical developments in education and Physical Education: 100 years of PE; NCPE since 1987; the effects of curriculum planning, content, teaching and assessment, what are the factors that inform the design of the NCPE and policy makers. Investigation of the importance of PE: Definitions of PE, Sport and physical activity; does the NCPE provide a curriculum for diverse populations; theoretical analysis using a range of sociological perspectives to inform critical discussion. Investigation of how PE supports inclusivity for marginalised groups: Inclusion; pedagogical approaches, assessment that promote equality; the influence of teachers, location and funding. Changes in Physical Education that have impacted on pedagogy and practice: Funding, initiatives, NGB’s, government departments and ITT; guest speaker and President of IMM past students association to discuss the role of the PE from an historical context. What is the philosophy of PE going to look like in the future: Critical discussion exploring the extent to which policy, provision and practice promotes equality, diversity and inclusion; the factors that affect this in the future. Impact of PE on the development of young people: Personal, social, cognitive and physical skills that support lifelong involvement in physical activity.
