Aims

To introduce students to key themes and debates in modern German history. To introduce students to key historiographical works and scholarly debates in modern German history. To encourage students to critically reflect on the representations of history in public spaces, monuments, exhibitions and museums.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Demonstrate detailed knowledge of key historical themes and scholarly debates in the field of modern German history.
2.
The ability to engage with and critically assess historiography and sources relating to modern German history.
3.
The ability to critically engage and appraise the ways modern German history is presented in museums, memorial sites and exhibitions.

Outline Syllabus:Week 1 - The Peculiarities of German History: The Sonderweg Debate Week 2 - Imperial Germany 1871-1914 Week 3 - Germany and the First World War, 1914-1918 Week 4 - Weimar Republic, 1919-1933 Week 5 - The Nazi Dictatorship, 1933-1945 Week 6 - Preparation Workshop for the Field Trip Week 7 - Field Trip Week 8 - Reading Week (in lieu of week 7) Week 9 - Second World War and the Holocaust, 1939-1945 Week 10 - The ‚Other‘ Germany: The German Democratic Republic, 1949-1990 Week 11 - The Federal Republic of Germany, 1949-1990 Week 12 - The End of the “Long Road West”?
Module Overview:
This module will introduce key themes and debates in modern German history and key historiographical works and scholarly debates in modern German history. You will also be encouraged to critically reflect on the representations of history in public spaces, monuments, exhibitions and museums.
Additional Information:No knowledge of German language is required for this module.
