Aims

This module aims to instil students with the ability to individually produce a detailed spatial design, which is derived from a masterplan and that responds to ideas developed through working at a range of scales. The module then aims to develop students’ understanding of technical strategies relating to design, resulting in meaningful and considered integration of strategies for sustainable design and materials.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Have an understanding of the potential impact of building projects on existing and proposed communities. (GC6.3).
2.
Have an understanding of the needs and aspirations of building users. (GC5.1).
3.
Have the ability to prepare and present an urban design project that assimilates a concept using a range of media to include physical model-making and in response to a brief. (GC1.1).
4.
Be able to synthesise the creative application of art, cultural, environmental or other work to urban design projects, in terms of their conceptualisation and representation. (GC3.2 / 3.3).
5.
Be able to compare and contrast the proposed environmental strategies with exemplary precedents. (GC4.1).
6.
Outline the relevant precepts of sustainable design and appraise their use in the project. (GC5.2).
7.
Communicate clearly through writing, drawings and diagrams an evaluation of their project’s environment.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:In this module students will work individually to develop detailed proposals for the design of a space; the area of each students’ study is to be taken from an existing urban design masterplan proposal. Students will consider how spaces can develop a coherent sense of place, and how people will meaningfully occupy that place through activity and intervention. Students will also develop a technical study for the detailed spatial design, which will address issues such as: sustainability, environmental design, materials selection and water.
Module Overview:
This module aims to instil you with the ability to individually produce a detailed spatial design, which is derived from a masterplan and that responds to ideas developed through working at a range of scales. The module then aims to develop your understanding of technical strategies relating to design, resulting in meaningful and considered integration of strategies for sustainable design and materials.
Additional Information:This module develops the urban design strategy (5121AR) into a public realm design proposal for a key public space. Module outputs will demonstrate the design proposal both spatially and technically, including microclimate, sustainable materials and water management.
