Aims

1. To provide a sociological understanding of the origins of cities and urban research. 2. To provide a sociological understanding of the nature of urban politics. 3. To provide a sociological understanding of urban issues and conflicts.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Studying cities form a sociological perspective. Topics include: Chicago School, LA School, Urban Capitalism, Postmodern urbanism, urban entrepreneurialism, urban culture, gentrification, studentification, race and segregation in the city, the green city, gender and the city. Liverpool and other cities will provide the case study context for these topics.
Module Overview:
After completing the module you should be able to:
  • Identify and explain the origins of sociological analysis of cities.
  • Analyse the nature of urban politics in the UK and other societies.
  • Discuss and explain the nature, consequences and resistance to a range of urban issues in the UK and other societies.
Additional Information:This module will equip students to discuss cities, urban processes and urban futures from a critical and sociological perspective. It will enhance their understanding of the nature, origins and consequences of urban issues.
