Aims

Introduce students to the key roles of various non-state actors such as International Organisations, Non-Governmental Organisations and Transnational Corporations. Develop an understanding of how such actors are structured and how this impacts policy making and engagement within the international system. Introduce students to theoretical perspectives such as new institutionalism and neo-liberal institutionalism, alongside theories such as realism, liberalism and Marxism, to understand how these organisations have developed and how they behave.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Topics to cover in the module will typically include: • What are international organisations • Different types of non-state actor • History and development of organisations • Security (UN, NATO) • Health (WHO) • Aid & Development (WTO, World Bank) • Emerging challenges
Module Overview:
This module enables you to explore the roles and relations of international organisations through a thematic approach. This will allow you to engage with key organisations focussing on broader themes of international politics, such as aid and development, health, security and the environment. This approach will allow you to engage with core debates and explore the roles of a multitude of organisations.
