Aims
1. To introduce students to the literature, culture and politics of modernity
2. To engage with a variety of modernist texts and assist students in developing a set of skills appropriate to their analysis
Learning Outcomes
1.
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key concepts in relation to modernism as a literary, cultural and historical phenomenon;
2.
Show evidence of skills of critical analysis applied to examples of modernist writing
3.
Design and plan in detail a research project outlining the questions, sources, and approaches which would be used to investigate a research question arising out of issues and material explored on the module.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:The module will explore modernity and modernism from a number of perspectives, outlined below. Different tutors may make their own selections of texts to suit their expertise – for instance, focusing on modernism in America, Britain, Europe and / or worldwide.
Components:
• Geographies of modernism: American, British, European and global contexts, and the exchanges between them
• Spaces: the modern city and the modern country
• Social change: mass culture and consumerism, migration and immigration, radical politics
• Cultural forms: literary, musical and visual
• Intellectual paradigms: the rise of social science: sociology, psychology, anthropology
• Legacies of modernism: the death / afterlife of the avant-garde
Module Overview:
This module focuses on the emergence of a modernist movement in Europe and America at the beginning of the 20th century and lasting until the decades after the close of the Second World War. You will be introduced to the literature, culture and politics of modernity through an engagement with a variety of modernist texts.

Additional Information:Given the wide geographical and historical reach of modernist culture, this course is designed with a degree of flexibility in the selection of material. It focuses on the emergence of a modernist movement in Europe and America at the beginning of the 20th century and lasting until the decades after the close of the Second World War, but the field may be explored from a particular cultural perspective, e.g. American or British, as decided by the tutor. Students will be advised on the specific content of the module before they make their selection at the end of the previous academic year.
