Aims
To prepare the student to work with vulnerable women and families in complex circumstances.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Discuss and reflect upon the impact of wider public health factors including social and health inequalities, on maternity services care provision.
2.
Articulate the use of midwifery skills and knowledge within the public health arena, to meet the wider complex needs of the vulnerable family.
3.
Critically evaluate the role of the midwife and multi-disciplinary team in the care of vulnerable women and their families with wider complex needs.
4.
Critically reflect on the impact of wider public health factors on maternal and neonatal outcomes.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Poverty, social deprivation, social and health inequalities, public health and maternity, safeguarding, mental health, perinatal mental health, equality culture and diversity, domestic abuse, female genital mutilation (FGM), migrants/asylum seekers/refugees, disability, learning needs, child sexual exploitation (CSE), human trafficking and modern slavery, forced marriage, maternal age, sex workers, housing issues & homelessness, sexual abuse, substance misuse, MBRRACE Reports, loss and bereavement, end of life care, caring for the carer, LGBT+, working with interdisciplinary and multiagency teams.

Additional Information:The module will introduce and expose the students to the wider influences of public health on maternity care, provision and outcomes. The student will be encouraged and facilitated to reflect, challenge and evaluate the evidence base in relation to public health and the complexities of care for vulnerable women and families.
