Aims

1. To critically understand how criminological theory and research influences policy and practice. 2. To critically examine the application of theory and research in developing professional practice, 3. To draw on criminological theory and research to contextualise contemporary issues facing practitioners in criminal justice and welfare settings.

Effectively communicate the relevance of criminological knowledge to a specific area;

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:An indicative range of topics studied includes: • Perspectives on ‘applied criminology’ • Production and application of criminological knowledge • Guest talks from practitioners in a range of criminal justice settings (e.g. policing, probation, prisons, work with victims, work with ex-offenders). • Influence of theory and criminological research in policy / practice • Assessment preparation and guidance
Module Overview:
This module centres on guest talks from practitioners working in a range of settings. These are supported by lectures to provide academic context. The latter will help you to reflect on the extent to which criminological theories, concepts and research are relevant in a practice-based setting. The module also explores wider discussions about the production and application of criminological knowledge. The module equips you with a broad awareness of policy and practice in criminal justice, as well as offering opportunities to engage with practitioners and consider career options.
