Aims
1. To broaden the students' study of short fiction and encourage independent reading;
2. To support students in the development of their own short fiction writing, and develop their confidence through a critical, technical and creative understanding of craft and their own creative process;
3. To encourage students to expand their thinking about the possibilities and challenges of writing short stories;
4. To develop the students' ability to constructively criticise and evaluate the work of published authors as well as their peers;
5. To develop the students' ability to use the views of others in the development and enhancement of their own work.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Demonstrate broad reading (both directed and independent) within the short story form.
2.
Produce a piece of original writing that demonstrates the understanding of craft they have reached through engaging with the module materials – the theory and examples of good practice that they have studied.
3.
Analyse a range of writerly practices, identifying the effectiveness of particular elements of craft.
4.
Appraise and evaluate the work of their peers in workshop settings.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:
After the introductory grounding in narrative craft of L4 modules, the student will: broaden their reading; develop their understanding of narrative craft; acquire a range of elements of narrative craft; analyse the techniques of published short fiction practitioners in order to produce an essay that demonstrates their understanding of the art of short fiction. As a foundation for the more intensive workshopping of Level 6 prose modules, the student will, in supervised workshops, constructively criticise the work of published authors and peers.
