Aims

To develop student knowledge of the foundations of European Union law and its interpretation To raise awareness of European substantive criminal law, criminal procedure and sentencing To understand the co-operation in, and enforcement of, European criminal law at national level To reflect upon the challenges for European criminal law in the Brexit era

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the foundations and principles underpinning European criminal law

Critically evaluate the nature and scope of European substantive criminal law, associated criminal justice procedures, and systems of punishment

Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the co-operation and enforcement procedures associated with European criminal law

Reflect critically on the challenges to European criminal law in a postmodern era of nationalism, and on the ways in which European criminal law could be reformed

Outline Syllabus:Foundations and principles relating to European Union law How European Union law is interpreted in judicial decision-making European substantive criminal law European criminal procedure European criminal justice: sentencing and punishment Bilateral co-operation in the enforcement of European criminal law Multi-lateral co-operation in, and direct enforcement of, European criminal law Challenges and reforms to European criminal law: what is its future after Brexit?
Module Overview:
To develop student knowledge of the foundations of European Union law and its interpretation To raise awareness of European substantive criminal law, criminal procedure and sentencing To understand the co-operation in, and enforcement of, European criminal law at national level To reflect upon the challenges for European criminal law in the Brexit era
Additional Information:This module aims to develop student knowledge of European criminal law - its foundations, its processes and its enforcement at international and national level. Students will also be encouraged to think critically about the roles and purposes of European criminal law in an era of nationalism and Brexit.
