Aims
1. A critical understanding of law and ethics as it affects journalism.
2. Familiarise students with industry codes of practice.
3. Develop a thorough understanding of the regulatory, theoretical and practical issues involved in reporting legal proceedings.
4. Develop the ability to critically analyse problems of law and ethics and present appropriate solutions.
Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate knowledge of key concepts of law affecting journalism.

Demonstrate critical understanding of ethical frameworks and codes governing the press and related media and their effects on Journalism.
3.
Evaluate and present principles of law and ethics underlying Journalism from sources, including case studies to support arguments with proper referencing of material.

Use structured and coherent arguments in the discussion of the relationship between ethics, the law and Journalism practice in the UK

Outline Syllabus:Understand the working of law courts and tribunals; contempt, defamation; copyright; human rights; data protection; press freedom; censorship; harm and offence; official secrets; race and discrimination; broadcast regulation.
