Aims

1. Explore the theories underpinning working with offenders in community and custodial settings 2. Critically assess organisation and structure of custodial and community based interventions. 3. Examine the occupational cultures of those working in custodial and community settings. 4. Provide an insight into the tensions and dilemmas surrounding service delivery in community and custodial settings. 5. Compare and contrast in a balanced way the strengths and weaknesses of policies relating to resettlement and through the gate provision.

Prison cultures 5. Delivering interventions in custodial settings 6. Theorising community sanctions and measures 7. organisation and structure of community sanctions and measures 8. Probation cultures 9. Delivering interventions in the community 10. Resettlement and Through the Gate service provision 11. Overview and assessment preparation
Module Overview:
This module allows you to pursue a more in-depth study of two of the main criminal justice institutions, Prison and Probation services. The design and delivery surrounding their administration has remained the subject of intense debate and controversy throughout their history. Therefore, you will be encouraged to critically engage with these debates taking into consideration the theory, policy, and practice which surrounds community and custodial interventions.
Additional Information:This module is a core option for Level 5 students which allows them to pursue a more in-depth study of two of the main criminal justice institutions. The Prison and Probation services occupy a central position in the Criminal Justice System of all developed nations. Much is known about these services, their administration, their effectiveness and their problems however the design and delivery surrounding their administration has remained the subject of intense debate and controversy throughout their history. Students will be encouraged to critically engage with these debates taking into consideration the theory, policy, and practice which surrounds community and custodial interventions.
