Aims
This module aims to provide students with an introduction to the methods of qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis, as well as enabling students to critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of published research papers.
Learning Outcomes

Determine appropriate research questions and hypotheses

Select and apply relevant tools for qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis.

Apply ethical principles to the design of a research project

Module Content
Outline Syllabus:1. Research paradigms and approaches
2. Conducting a literature search and critical review
3. Determining and suitable research questions and hypotheses
4.Qualitative and quantitative data collection methods and instruments e.g. survey, interview, questionnaire, observation, focus groups, experiments and analytic study design
5. Statistical methods of data analysis: descriptive statistics, correlations & hypothesis testing.
6. Analysis of qualitative data
7. Ethics in research
8. Preparing a research proposal

Additional Information:This module is designed to provide students with the skills, knowledge and understanding of the ways in which environmental health research is undertaken. It does this by providing students with an understanding of the various approaches and methodologies that are used in environmental health research, and of the process of critically appraising the research of others and applying the results of this appraisal to their own knowledge-base.
