Aims

Music Creation Techniques 1 serves as a practical and theoretical introduction to music creation with a primary focus on the generation, development and presentation of original compositions and arrangements. Students will be introduced to a range of key composition, harmonic and arrangement concepts and will apply these in the original music created.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Recognise and utilise the most common forms and composition and arranging techniques in creating new popular, contemporary and commercial musical works to specific briefs.
2.
In the context of an emerging canon of popular, contemporary and commercial music, constructively review the development of their own and their peers' new musical works throughout the writing / rewriting process and apply feedback.
3.
Recall arranging and scoring techniques using computer notation software to present musical scores.
4.
Demonstrate advanced music theory, harmony, rhythmic and aural skills.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Composition lectures will explore creative conventions in popular, contemporary and commercial music and will make connections to related fundamental harmonic and theoretical techniques.

Composition seminars will explore the practical application of techniques studied within composition lectures and will be a forum for regular feedback and the development of their own and their peers' musical works throughout the composing process.

Aural and rhythm workshops will support students to develop an increasing familiarisation with harmonic and rhythmic concepts through listening and practical work.

Drop-in classes will support students with key issues relating to scoring or the application of music creation techniques studied.

Music Creation Techniques 1 serves as a practical and theoretical introduction to composition and arranging with a focus on the generation, development and presentation of original works. It will provide learners with an understanding of fundamental concepts in composition and arranging and develop understanding in music theory, harmony, rhythmic and aural skills that will provide a foundation for further studies and creative practice.
