Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Within the module students will be exposed to several different techniques and styles to broaden their frame of reference and enrich their performance and creative skills. This serves as a vehicle to develop confidence, creativity, and originality in their work. Understanding the parameters of other techniques will enrich and deepen learning within the key dance techniques of the programme and add important additional physical skills to their portfolio and performance spectrum. Urban Dance Technique Different Urban dance techniques will be introduced in level 4 and 5, complementing contemporary training and enabling expanded vocabulary and hybrid forms. These might include Hip-hop, Breaking, Popping and Locking, or Commercial styles. Within each style, the work will focus on generating understanding and foundational skills in use of physicality, co-ordination, energy, precision and theatricality. Improvisation Technique Students will be guided through ongoing movement research and exploration to extend their technical vocabulary and increase their ability to generate, analyse and evaluate movement. Students will learn how to respond to stimuli, follow tasks, develop an awareness of themselves in relation to others in space and time, experiment and take risk within the performance space. Text, Body & Voice Students will be introduced to key acting principles and encouraged to explore their own individual possibilities as a performer. Text-based work and its multiple possibilities of translation from page to stage will form part of the training. Basic anatomy and physiology of the voice will be introduced, together with explorations of its technical and creative potential. Students will study the use of voice in relation to movement and performance. Other techniques might be introduced to enrich and enhance the module.
Additional Information:This module equips students with core training in important associated techniques relevant to the development of a young, contemporary dance artist: techniques stemming from the Urban and Commercial dance fields, Improvisation techniques and theatrical techniques delivered under the umbrella of Text, Body & Voice. Assessment is via 2 practical class-based presentations.
