Aims

1. Provide a broad overview of the history of dance, tracing lineages for both contemporary dance and commercial dance fields and their various intersections. 2. Explain how to contextualise own practice in reference to dance history. 3. Develop foundational knowledge of and skills in academic writing and research. 4. Provide guided research tasks on elements of the history of performing arts. 5. Develop the ability to construct argument and communicate ideas clearly in a variety of forms.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:1. Historical Perspectives on Dance Students will be introduced to a broad history of Dance from the origin up to the end of the mid-20th Century. This will be delivered broadly chronologically through thematically context-based lectures. The context will be viewed from a global and culturally inclusive perspective linking developments and movements into wider political, cultural, and economic events. Students will also be introduced to research strategies and the skills and vocabulary required to undertake critical evaluation of performing arts practice. 2. Academic Skills and Professional Development Students will be introduced to a range of study skills, which will support their academic progression through the programme, including: research skills (gathering, sifting, evaluating, and utilising information), constructing ideas and developing arguments, writing, communication and ICT skills.
Additional Information:This module equips students with an understanding of the historical and cultural contexts of the performing arts, providing foundational knowledge to consider and critique current practice in the field. Assessment is via a presentation and essay.
