Aims

Song Demo Production 1 serves as a practical introduction to recording and song production through desktop recording. The module will introduce learners to common software recording packages and recording techniques and will develop analytical and musical arrangement skills in a production context. It aims to provide students with a skill and knowledge base that will provide a firm foundation for further development and application.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate a practical understanding of the principal functions of digital audio workstations and basic recording and mixing techniques

Employ music technology to realise and present demo quality recordings using effective strategies to optimise recorded performances

Recognise and utilise common production and arrangement techniques in the realisation of new musical works

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:* Techniques for creating demo-standard material on desktop-based systems. * Developing an operational knowledge of software-based audio workstations including MIDI programming, audio editing and basic mixing and processing. * Planning and executing demo recordings. * Understanding the uses and application of common production and arranging techniques. Lectures will introduce the principal concepts of production with a focus on developing the analytical ear and an understanding of common production and arrangement techniques. The workshop seminars will introduce the equipment and software used to produce music and facilitate the development of practical production skills. Seminars will also provide opportunity for ongoing peer and tutor feedback on work prepared in private study time.
