Aims
This module focuses on the different areas of law relevant to the construction industry. An understanding of applying for planning permission and building control regulations to evaluating building design will be developed. Topics covered include planning law, building control regulations, insurance, environmental legislation, and the laws associated with construction.
On successful completion of this module students will be able to apply statutory requirements to the construction sector.

Outline Syllabus:Gaining planning permission: legislation and regulatory agencies, types of development where approval is not required, stages of planning permission and the approval process
Appealing planning decisions: the right of appeal and stages of appeal
Planning enforcement: notification procedures and right of appeal
Building control systems: history and development, legal and legislative framework and regulatory agencies
Requirements of building control and regulations: building regulation standards, obtaining approval and the right of appeal, inspection and compliance, enforcement and dangerous buildings
Administration of law
Environmental legislation
Liability; occupiers’ liability and vicarious liability
Trespass to land laws
Insurance within construction
Sustainability requirements
