Aims
Establish a foundation in Academic Skills required to undertake undergraduate studies.
Enable students to undertake guided and independent research.
Develop students' ability to construct arguments, write and communicate ideas clearly in a variety of forms and contexts.
Establish a broad overview of the history of theatre and introduce a critical awareness of perspectives and histories guided by dominant cultures.
Establish a broad overview of the current theatre landscape, practitioners and companies that exist in both the ‘mainstream’ and ‘emerging’ sector and in distinct locations.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:The module will cover the following areas:
Academic Skills: Students will be introduced to a range of study skills, which will allow them to progress successfully through the programme, including research skills (gathering, sifting, evaluating, and utilising information); constructing ideas and developing arguments; writing and communication skills.
Students will also be introduced to research strategies and the skills and vocabulary required to undertake critical evaluation of performing arts practice and their understanding of the potential place within the performing arts.
History of…: Introduction to the History of Theatre and current debate to recontextualise this narrative for the 21st Century. Students will be introduced to a broad history of the performing arts up to the end of the 20th Century, including film. This will be delivered broadly chronologically with some thematically based lectures.
Landscape: After a brief overview of the performing arts industry the module will go on to exploration the 21st Century performance landscape; identifying established and emerging practitioners and companies, spotlighting innovation and change within the industry. Students will apply research strategies, skills and vocabulary required to undertake critical evaluation of performing arts practice and their understanding of the potential place within the performing arts.
The weekly Year Group Tutorial will be used to discuss elements of the programme, explore current trends within performance, highlight and discuss current debates within training and the industry. Students will be encouraged to have a voice in discussions and selection of discussion topics.
Additional Information:This module equips the students with the fundamental academic skills required to undertake an undergraduate degree. It will give them an overview of the history of theatre and cinema and an understanding of historical and current social, and cultural contexts.
