Aims

The aims of the module are to: 1. Provide the student with the essential techniques to listen critically and undertake guided practice in listening critically to different types of music. 2. Enable the student to articulate the elements of different types of music from both music theory and music production perspectives.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Describe and compare the musical elements of a given piece of music including instrumentation, major/minor harmonies and overall form.
2.
Define musical genres and trends based on a generalised review of their associated musical elements and conventions.
3.
Extrapolate the musical elements of a given trend or genre and describe their use in their own creations/productions.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:This module is both theoretical and practical. Theory Within this part of the module the student will be exposed to a variety of musical pieces and guided to recognise and compare their musical elements including instrumentation, harmonic structure (major/minor), melodic and counter-melodic content, time signature, audio effects, production techniques and ontological association to the frequency spectrum. Practical Building on the theoretical studies the students will be guided through basic ear training and dictation exercises, as well as encouraged to apply the defined musical elements and techniques to their own music productions.
Additional Information:The module introduces students to key techniques for listening critically. Assessment is via exam.
