Aims

11. Explore how art and design has and can communicate and manipulate narratives for social, political and commercial purposes;

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Through visual lectures, presentations, discussions and visits, you will explore the history of art and design focussing on the historical relationship between both and analysing the initial convergence, following the industrial revolution, and later divergence of both activities.
Individual lectures and study periods will focus on critical factors that have influenced and shaped the nature of art and design including, politics, technology, economics, consumerism and attitudinal changes in society. You will gain an understanding of the practice of both art and design, and the differences and/or similarities between the role of the artist and that of the designer.
You will discuss and debate complex issues of perception such as subjectivity, objectivity, taste and style, making reference to manifestos and schools of thought adopted in the past two centuries.
Additional Information:
This module presents a chronological approach to the study of art and design as a wholly integrated historical subject illustrating what influences art and in turn how art influences design.
